Xiaomi, Chinese smartphone maker launched the Redmi 2 at an event held in New Delhi today which is the successor to the popular budget smartphone Redmi 1s. The device is priced at Rs 6,999 which is low cost as its predecessor and as always get available via e-commerce website Flipkart. Registrations are starting from today at 6PM and the phone will go on sale on March 24. A limited Edition of this entirely new Redmi 2 having 2GB RAM and 16GB onboard storage will be launched later on. There would be around 30,000 to 40,0000 units of the Redmi 2 for grabbing on that day.
The device, which was launched at CES this year makes sense for the company as they have discontinued with the Redmi 1s, leaving it with no entry-level smartphone to compete with the new Moto E launched by Motorola just few days back before this launch.
Hugo Barra, Vice President of International for Xiaomi took the stage and said that they are the fifth largest smartphone vendor in India. and also added that around 15,000 India-specific themes have been downloaded for phones.
Specifications of Redmi 2:
The device has an internal storage at 8GB and can be further expanded via microSD card. It has an 8MP rear camera along with a 2MP front-facing camera. In terms of connectivity, it includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS besides 4G LTE (TDD/FDD) network support. It will be available in pink, yellow, green, grey and white colour variants.
